Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department reissued its Level 2 travel advisory for the popular Caribbean destination of Turks and Caicos ahead of spring break travel. With a Level 2 advisory, the State Department urges U.S. travelers to “Exercise Increased Caution”—the same level as such well-known destinations as the U.K., France, Spain and Italy.

Now, officials from Experience Turks and Caicos and the Ministry of Tourism are acknowledging the advisory’s reissue, but are putting it into better context for travelers. In a reactionary press release, the two organizations pointed out that the advisory, which has maintained a Level 2 status since July 2023, does not discourage travel to the islands.

The only modification in the recent update pertains to illegal firearm offenses, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining strict firearm regulations for the protection of both residents and visitors. The updated advisory allows courts to impose proportionally consistent fines and custodial sentences for such offenses.

“We are committed to ensuring that every visitor enjoys a safe, secure, and seamless vacation in our ‘Beautiful by Nature’ destination. While the advisory has not changed in its overall assessment, it reinforces the importance of our strict firearm regulations, which are in place to protect both residents and visitors,” said Turks and Caicos’ Minister of Tourism, the Hon, Zhavago Jolly.

“We continue to work closely with law enforcement, tourism stakeholders, and international partners to maintain our reputation as a safe, world-class destination. We encourage all visitors to stay informed, exercise basic travel precautions, and carefully check their luggage to avoid any inadvertent issues. Our goal is for every traveler to fully enjoy their time here, knowing that Turks and Caicos remains one of the safest and most desirable vacation spots in the Caribbean.”

Tourism in Turks and Caicos is thriving, with visitor numbers on track for a record-breaking year. Officials remain dedicated to providing an exceptional travel experience, ensuring the highest standards of safety and hospitality. With its pristine beaches, luxury resorts and vibrant culture, Turks and Caicos continues to stand out as a top choice for travelers seeking a world-class Caribbean escape.
